Compounding is the art and science of preparing medications to fit the unique needs of an individual patient. This may be done for medically necessary reasons: a medication may be converted from a solid pill to a liquid, non-essential ingredients may be eliminated for a patient with allergies or an exact dose may be compounded as needed. Compounding may also be done for voluntary reasons, such as adding favorite flavors to a medication.
Compounding has been an integral part of pharmacy since the origins of the profession. Pharmacists find this part of their career intriguing and fulfilling. They often find solutions to medication problems for their patients to make their lives easier. They work closely with physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and veterinarians to provide exceptional healthcare for each individual.
On a personal note, compounding has brought much satisfaction to Mike and Katy as pharmacists. On a daily basis, they strive to bring professional and friendly care to our patients. We hope each of our customers finds a unique experience for themselves or their pets at Nature's Pharmacy.
The Food and Drug Administration has stated that compounded prescriptions are both ethical and legal as long as they are prescribed by a licensed practitioner for a specific patient and compounded at a licensed pharmacy. Nature's Pharmacy is regulated by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy.
